SKANDINAVIA ‘Global Warning’ (2004)
A new band fronted by singer/songwriter/violinist Eliza Newman
(ex-Bellatrix). Joining her are guitarist Claire Wakeman, bassist Martin
Maddaford and drummer David Collinder. Eliza notes Led Zeppelin as one of
her influences and that rings loud and clear on much of the music on here
like the strong opening track ‘Never Too Late’.
Eliza has a very strong voice that never struggles to rise above the music as can be the case with
some vocalists and she also adds the band’s ‘secret weapon’, here violin
playing. This is used like an extra guitar at time such is the sharpness and
loudness of her playing. Other highlights include the quieter refrain of
‘Swim’ and ‘Blue Boy’. Album highlight has to be ‘Valkyria’, an anthemic
track and a full musical sound.
For those who like the Led Zep stomp mixed with a good ear for melody
Skandinavia deliver. Fans of Karnataka, Mostly Autumn and Heart will also
find much to enjoy on here. A strong debut and the band have set their
standards high.
