SEPULTURA‘Roorback’ SPV 0857832 (2003)
The band’s ninth album with the line-up still consisting of vocalist
Derrick Green, drummer Igor Cavalera, bass player Paulo Pinto Jnr. and
guitarist Andreas Kisser. The band have a large and loyal following and live
they are apparently immense! This album is a brutal assault on your senses
and it rocks like a good ‘un. Opener ‘Come Back Alive’ lulls you in with a
subuded intro before you are pelted with a wall of sound and Derrick Green’s
throaty roar. You can almost feel the emotions that went into ‘Godless’ and
‘Apes Of God’ - the pounding drums and shredding guitars - superb! The band
combine chugging metal riffs with tribal and hardcore influences, none more
so than on the relentless pounding of ‘Leech’. The band even do a slow
number in the brooding ‘Bottomed Out’, complete with a neat drum pattern at
the songs end.
Not an album for those who like mellower rock but for sheer intensity and
delivery of music you’d be hard pushed to find a better album this year. The
band’s fans will love the music on here and if you want a heavy fix of rock
grab a copy of this album.
