Bluesfest masterclass...
This 3 DVD set, recorded in 2004, sees three sets (one by each artist) by Bobby Parker, Clarence Brown and Buddy Guy. Three blues artists of some repute, brought together by Santana, whose earlier work is very much blues influenced.
Each artist has their own band but there's guests aplenty, including Santana who turns up with all three.
The first disc is Bobby Parker, providing some excellent guitar and the blues is solid, with some neat playing by all. Imagine the Blues Brothers tripping off on a jam - it has that feel, although the organ is occasionally a little too prominent giving an MOR or slight jazz feel.
When Carlos does appear he shows he can play rhythm or solo with the best of them.
Next up is Clarence Brown, who kicks off with the smooth jazz of 'Bits And Pieces', and the slow paced blues is easy on the ear and well performed. The lead saxophone is soulful too. Brown later takes up the violin to give his blues a country edge.
Buddy Guy kicks off with some chat before an acoustic rendition of 'Good Morning Little Schoolgirl', while later acoustic work is quite dynamic. The guy's a demon on the electric guitar too, as the two jams show (one with Nile Rodgers, both with Santana and Bobby Parker), and many will recognise 'Stormy Monday'.
Great viewing and listening for all blues fans, with nearly 4 hours of material.
