RUSSELL ALLEN’S ATOMIC SOUL (Inside Out) (2005)
Symphony X vocalist Russell Allen has produced a fine solo album that
pays homage to some of his influences like Dio, Sabbath et al
There is certainly a mix of musical styles on here from the Monster
Magnet meets Sabbath doom riffing of ‘Blackout’ and ‘Voodoo Hand’ through to
the ballad ‘The Distance’ (featuring some great distorted guitar). I just
love the groove laden ‘Saucy Jack’ that tips a hat to Whitesnake, whilst the
title track features Sratovarius keyboards player Jens Johansson and again
it’s a Whitesnake/Dio like rocker - great stuff.
Not a prog metal release as some Symphony X fans would doubtless expect
but instead a damn fine classic rock album, the like of which we sadly get
so few of nowadays. A great way to get his undoubted vocal talents
recognized by a whole new audience.
