PAUL GILBERT Space Ship One Mascot (2005)
Normally great guitarist’s solo efforts tend to pale in comparison to their
full time gig...obvious exceptions being Ritchie Sambora and, um, not many
others. Gilbert with this release has bucked the trend and with great
aplomb.
This is a lovely collection of Mr Big-ish pop-rock tunes including a
nod to his Japanese fans with the track 'Boku No Atama'.
There is nothing too deep on here, but the songs are just sheer class. The title track is an
amusing ode to space tourism while 'Every Hot Girl is Rockstar' is just
plain goofy fun.
There is a very enjoyable running through this set and one that is rather infectious. Not only does he play cracking guitar, he sings
as well. And unlike one guitarist we could think of...Joe Perry for
example...he has a pretty damn good voice. This is by far the best thing I
have heard from Gilbert since the demise of Mr Big. If only all reviews were
this fun to research!
