PAT TRAVERS ‘Power Trio’ (Blues Bureau/Shrapnel BB20462) (2003)
An album of covers from the very underrated blues rock guitarist Pat
Travers. He is joined on bass by Gunter Nezhoda and legendary drummer,
Aynsley Dunbar (Whitesnake/Jouney/UFO). As the band adopt a classic power
trio format you can guess that these covers rock like a good ‘un!
Nice and bluesy version of Cream’s ‘White Room’, plenty of guitar from
Travers on here. Plenty of other great blues workouts as well like ‘Day Of
The Eagle’ and ‘Inside Looking Out’, with Travers’ gravely voice suiting the
song well. The latter also features some slow soloing accompanied by sparse
drum and bass backing. ‘Free Man’ ups the pace, featuring frantic guitar and
pounding drums. The track sees Chris Logan (MSG) adding backing vocals and
Mike Varney guesting on guitar as well. ZZ Top’s ‘Nasty Dogs And Funky
Kings’ is a great slice of blues boogie - clean riffs and Travers sounding
like he is a member of ZZ Top! Album highlight for me is the sterling cover
of Free’s ‘Fire And Water’, Travers may not have the vocal range of Paul
Rodgers but he adds a dirty, blues feel to the song and boy, what a damn
fine solo!
If you like blues rock or just damn fine guitar driven rock then grab
this album. A cracking choice of covers that suit the trio well and allows
Pat Travers to illustrate his guitar talents fully. Dunbar and Nezhoda
provide a rock solid backbeat throughout and hopefully this line-up could
get out and do some live dates.
