MIKEY JONES The Light Of Day www.mikey-jones.co.uk (2006)
The solo release from Kick bass player and main songwriter for UK rocker Kick, a band who despite selling over 30,000 albums across three releases never quite got the exposure and success they deserved.
With the band in hiatus at the moment, fans can revel in this release. Musically it does touch on Kick (with Kick/Eden vocalist Nick Workman popping up on backing vocals on two tracks) but with more emphasis on keys and harder edged guitar parts.
The opening trio of tunes are top draw, with 'Who?' reminding me of Christian rockers Jet Circus in the very electronic style music. 'Suffocating' has a very catchy chorus and again some neat keys/guitar mixes.
'Summer Daze' is perfect for a heatwave (plus a sure fire track for serious airplay along with 'Suffocating') whilst 'The End of Time' closes the album in a quieter, reflective mode.
A very enjoyable and accomplished solo album that will please longstanding Kick fans, as well lovers of intelligent melodic rock.
