Lyza Wilson possesses one of those voices that can suit any musical
backing or style. This is her debut album and Lyza is ably assisted by Mark
Mangold (Touch/ Drive She Said/ The Sign), who is the producer/ chief
songwriter as well playing keyboards and drums.
There is a fine mix of songs from the pop rock of ‘I Don’t Care’ to the AOR balladry of ‘Anonymous’, an
album stand out for me. ‘I Like It’ goes straight for the airplay vote, with
its total pop feel but again it is the voice that lifts the track above mere
throwaway pop. ‘Suffer’ again enters ballad territory and with its lush
backing and slow build-up will delight fans of Mark Mangold’s previous
bands.
A little surprise awaits at the end f the album as Lyza covers ‘Maybe I
am A Fool’ - a tune made famous by Aretha Franklin and it is a literally a
show stopper. Wonderful vocals - this time soul tinged.
Lyza Wilson has a great voice and deserves to be heard as she sweeps from
Alannis Morissette angst to the folk side of say Joni Mitchell. There are a
lot of female singers out there now but few have the vocal range and sheer
talent of Lyza Wilson. Roll on album number two!
