JOE LYNN TURNER The Usual Suspects Frontiers FRCD230 (2005)
Joe Lynn Turner returns with his 9th solo album and the album title comes
form the ‘usual suspects’ as regards the musicians appearing on the album.
These include Al Pitrelli (Asia/Widowmaker/Savatgae/Megadeth) and ex-Rainbow
members’ drummer John O’Reilly and keyboard player Paul Morris.
As for the music, well let’s just say that if you hanker after that Rainbow sound of the
JLT era then you’re in for a treat. Gone are the overt AOR tracks that JLT
had on some later solo albums and back are the driving rockers like ‘Jack
Knife’ that features some neat organ fills. But JLT still does a ballad or
two with ‘Love And Love Again’ being amongst one of the best he’s recorded.
The album dips slightly midway through but it definatley ends on a high with
the all out rocker ‘Unfinished Business’ - big vocals and driving guitar
riffs make this a winner.
A good return to form and whilst not pushing musical boundaries with
this release, JLT will certainly please his fans.
