JANI LANE ‘Back Down To One’ (Z Records ZR1997086) (2003)
Warrant vocalist Jani Lane makes his solo splash with this album. Joining
him are Adam Mercer (drums), Matt Cleary (guitar) and Mark Matthews (bass),
with Dave Brooks on backing vocals. First off, it isn’t the classic Warrant
sound, more in the realm of pop punk/metal a la Good Charlotte and even
hints of Butch Walker in the cutting lyrics.
Take opener, ‘Funny’ which bounces along on a tight guitar riff complete with harmonies all over the
chorus. All the songs are tightly composed - not one over four minutes. The
title track wouldn’t look out of place on a Butch Walker album. Nice slice
of pop punk on ‘Oh Yeah’, which is better than say Good Charlotte in that
Jani Lane has a better vocal range. More of the same on ‘6 Feet Under’ and
‘Sick’, the latter the nearest to the Warrant sound especially in the guitar
sound.
A very surprising album, full of catchy melodies and shows Jani Lane’s
undoubted song writing talent when it comes to penning catchy tunes. With
some airplay it would be sure fire hit in the current musical climate.
