GILBY CLARKE & RED STAR REBELS Camden Underworld 9 May 2006
Red Star Rebels have the ability to be what The Darkness should have been.
Whereas The Darkness tend to come over as a bit tongue in cheek these guys
have the songs and the talent to carry it off properly. Their set was well
received and vocalist Blacky Rebel is very good at working the crowd. Songs
such as 'The Fast Die Young and Pretty', 'Hold', 'In It For The Kicks' and
'Too Young To Care' are a good introduction to a band that should do very
well.
Gilby Clarke is well known to most as Izzy Stradlin's replacement in Guns N
Roses, before that though he was in bands Candy and Kills For Thrills, and
it was good to see KFTs 'Motorcycle Cowboy' in the set, alongside GnR
favourites like 'Knockin' On Heavens Door', 'It's So Easy' and 'Sweet Child
O Mine' The Stones 'It's Only Rock n Roll' and 'Dead Flowers' The Clashs'
'Jail Guitar Doors' and a number of Clarkes own tracks including 'Cure Me or
Kill Me' and the 'Tijuana Jail'.
For one of the encore he even introduced the sell out crowd to his 12 year old daughter Frankie who played guitar and
sang with the band on Green Days 'American Idiot' (the band being completed
by ex- LA Guns/Col. Parker bassist Muddy Dutton and drummer Chad Stewart of
Motochrist). All in all a great gig by one of Rock n Roll's genuine nice
guys.
