DEVO Live 1980
Wienerworld WNRD2355 (2006)
New wavers with disappearing suits...

Devo

Devo were at the forefront of American New Wave, mixing Brian Eno (who also produced them) with Sparks and a touch of others.

This dual disc (DVD one side, audio the other) captures Devo at their height in 1980.

Opening with Whip It, the then current hit single, the crowd are enthusiastic. The band's uniform of sleeveless white shirts and flowerpot hats, and the keyboard led sound, made them distinctive.

As the show progresses, more guitars appear, giving a punkier edge. And near the end the suits disappear too. They were probably quite hot!

20 tracks, and a superlative text intro denouncing then president Regan and announcing De-Volution, it's an enjoyable and value for money set. With a bonus of another rare live performance, it's worth checking out.

If you're remotely a fan, it's something you have to have, and it's a good way to check out the band if you're vaguely interested too.
