COUNTERMINE Smallest Fears (EP) (2004)
This is a self-financed three track EP from a Bath-based five-piece band and
it shows promise.
First track "Panicked" brings to mind something off Live’s "Mental Jewelry"
debut. Quiet vocals and piano lead into a stirring chorus where the guitars
kick in.
"So Quiet" follows which starts with a keyboard refrain similar to that on
"Gazpatcho" by Marillion. The track again follows the quiet verse followed
by loud chorus approach that again brings Live to mind. By the end of the
track you’re singing along "Shut up, shut up, shut up I can’t be with anyone
else"
Closing track "You Shine" is a strum along acoustic number with a
countrified feel and didn’t really grab me after the power of the first two
tracks.
I look forward to hearing their full-length debut in the not too distant
future.
