BLAZE ‘As Live As It Gets’ (SPV 08974802) (2003)
Double live CD by the band fronted by ex-Wolfsbane/Iron Maiden vocalist
Blaze Bayley. Completing the line-up is drummer Jeff Singer, guitarists
Steve Wray and John Slater and Rob Naylor on bass. The shows were recorded
from recent dates in Switzerland and the UK.
It’s a mix of Wolfsbane, Maiden and Blaze material, all of which sit
well together. Highlights on disc one include the all-out metal of ‘Speed of
Light’, the brooding ‘Silicon Messiah’ plus Led Zep’s ‘Dazed and Confused’.
The latter is a very metal version with Blaze sounding like Saxon’s Biff
Byford! Much better than I thought it would sound. Disc two sees a faithful
rendition of Iron Maiden’s ‘Futureal’, along with the Maiden epic ‘Sign of
the Cross’ - Manowar eat your heart out! Over the top intro, duelling
guitars and Blaze giving a storming vocal performance.
A good, solid live album from a band who deserve some more exposure and
success. Catch them at this year’s UK Bloodstock festival in August.
