ATOMIC ROOSTER Live At The Marquee 1980 Angel Air SJPCD104 (2002)
Atomic Rooster were best remembered by many for the song ‘Devil's Answer'
and the fact that ELP's Carl Palmer was a band member. This CD marks the
last ever live recordings from the classic era line-up of John Du Cann
(guitar/vocals), Vincent Crane (organ) and Paul Hammond (drums).
The band are so heavy! ‘They Took Control of You' sounds like a melodic
Motorhead! The instrumental ‘Watch Out!' rollicks along with superb Hammond
organ by the late Vincent Crane. ‘Gershatser' interplays the organ and
guitar to great effect, with Paul Hammond's drums keeping the whole thing
together. The guitar playing of John Du Cann is allowed an ample showcase on
this track. The biggest audience cheer is of course for ‘Devil's Answer',
which should be in any self-respecting rock fan's music collection. Live the
song sounds even stronger than on record.
I would imagine live this band were good value and well worth seeing.
The power of the performances comes through loud and clear on the CD. The
whole package is well presented with informative sleeve notes and although
the live recording may not be of the highest quality it captures the live
feel very well. One for Atomic Rooster fans and those who enjoy the 70's
hard rock sound.
