ARTENSION ‘New Discovery’ (Frontiers 2003)
A melodic metal band that includes Royal Hunt’s Vitalij Kuprij on
keyboards and former Badlands/Royal Hunt vocalist John West amongst its
ranks.
Title track ‘New Discovery’ melds melodic rock vocals with prog metal
backing and keyboards soloing all over the place! John West has a strong
voice, in the style of Kansas’s Steve Walsh or Glenn Hughes, which suits the
material here very well. Only one slight drawback is that many songs are of
the same tempo giving little variety at times. ‘Hearts Are Heroes’ again
features some quality keyboard playing with ‘Endless Days’ being a ballad
complete with harmony vocal overload! ‘Call of the Wild’ is Glenn Hughes
meets all out metal - there is some very intense riffing on this track.
Another power metal album in an already crowded field but the vocals of
John West and keyboards of Vitalij Kuprij lift it above many other standard
releases. Plenty of metal styling but melody is the main driving force
throughout the album.
