SUBWAY TO SALLY - Unplugged tour!
A lot of fans have wondered, why SUBWAY TO SALLY never played their music in an
acoustic setting. But the musicians did absolutely not want to jump on the
Unplugged bandwagon that was racing through the world of Rock a few years ago.
2006 will change all this: After eight studio album and another long and
successful tour supporting "Nord Nord Ost", SUBWAY TO SALLY want to
present themselves in a more quiet and intimate fashion, focusing on playing
music together instead of the big rock show. This is why SUBWAY TO SALLY chose
to call this tour "Nackt", which is the German word for
"Naked".
Since SUBWAY TO SALLY always used a wide range of acoustic instruments, they
will rediscover their favourites from the last 10 years. The best part for the
die-hards: The setlist will feature tracks that have not been played for a long
time. The band also invited cellist B. Deutung, known for his work with
INCHTABOKATABLES and DEINE LAKEIEN.

SINISTER - Finally entered the studio!
Reunited
Dutch death metallers SINISTER will enter Stage One studio in Germany on
December 5 to begin recording their new album, "Afterburner", for an
early 2006 release through Nuclear Blast Records. The recording sessions are
expected to last two weeks.
SINISTER's current lineup consists of Aad Kloosterwaard, drummer and founder of
the band, on vocals, Alex Paul on guitar, and Paul Beltman (Ex-JUDGEMENT DAY)
on drums. A session bass player will be added when the band hits the road
again.
SOILWORK - 100th show for "Stabbing the Drama"
SOILWORK
vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid has posted the following message on the
band's official web site:
"We have three shows to go on this tour, the bus is getting close to stink
worse than you ever can imagine, still we've had an amazing tour... We got
stopped by the police on the border to California and they searched through the
whole bus for drugs, I tell you: poor dogs! I don't even think the dogs would
have found a bag filled with 20-pound cocaine in there… We couldn't possibly
[have] found a better band to share the bus with DARKANE though,
since we come from the same little town we had a lot to talk about during the
tour...
"You also might know that we got an award on the Danish Metal Awards as
the best international act which of course was really cool since we were
competing with acts like SYSTEM OF A DOWN and THE HAUNTED. So, a big hail to
the people voting for SOILWORK!
"Bill Ward from BLACK SABBATH came to watch our show in Anaheim and got
his own reserved seat on the balcony. He came to the dressing room after the
show and said he loved the set and praised Dirk's drumming... Thanx for coming
out, Bill!
"In Anaheim we also celebrated the 100th show for the 'Stabbing the Drama'
album since March when the album was released.. More to come..
"Also a big hail to MESHUGGAH
drummer Tomas Haake for joining the 'Bus-diving-party' in Anaheim. I'm
surprised we didn't break the bus in half....
"Other than that, keep the SOILWORK tattoo pics coming, i know there's a
helluva lot more pics to be sent to our site..."
KATAKLYSM - New album will contain DVD
Canadian
death metallers KATAKLYSM will release their new album, "In the Arms of
Devastation", as a limited-edition double-disc featuring a bonus live DVD,
entitled "The End of Serenity: Live in Strasbourg". "The DVD was
professionaly filmed in France during the 'Serenity in Fire' touring campaign,"
the band write in a newsletter. "Theres some pretty sick footage of fans
ripping the place and the stage apart...crazy stuff."
As previously reported, a rough-mix version of a brand-new KATAKLYSM track,
entitled "Like Angels Weeping (The Dark)", has been posted online at this location. The song comes off
the "In the Arms of Devastation", due on February 24, 2006. The CD
was mixed in Denmark by acclaimed producer Tue Madsen.
KATAKLYSM have tapped director Maurice Swinkels from LowlifeMedia (EXODUS,
ABORTED, GOREFEST) to film the band's video for the track "Crippled &
Broken", fom the upcoming album. The conceptual clip will be shot in
Amsterdam, Netherlands in early March, shortly prior to the band's European
co-headlining tour as part of the No Mercy festival.
KATAKLYSM have been confirmed for the "Metal Crusaders" North
American tour, set to take place in May/June next year. Also appearing on the
bill will be VADER and NUCLEAR ASSAULT. "Seeing the legendary NUCLEAR
ASSAULT, one of my personal fave thrash bands ripping 'Game Over', 'Survive'
and 'Handle with Care' classics will be a personal high for me!" stated
KATAKLYSM frontman Maurizio Iacono. The first confirmed date is May 26, 2006 at
le Medley in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. All canadian dates will be headlined by
KATAKLYSM.
DARKANE - Attend Jay Leno taping
DARKANE
guitarist Christofer Malmström has posted the following tour reports on the
band's official web site:
"Yes, tonight we played the 32nd show of the U.S. tour here in Seattle, WA
and tomorrow we'll end the tour in Vancouver where I will finally meet the
drummer of my solo project NON-HUMAN LEVEL, Ryan van Poederooyen.
"OK, so we crashed into Seattle... sorry, ...no, we actually crashed in
Seattle this morning. Everybody was sleeping when we suddenly woke up by the
bus shaking and braking heavily. I thought it would flip over, but in the last
second everything was still. All curtains of the bunks opened and a lot of
surprised metalheads stuck out their heads. It turned out we had crashed into
another car on the freeway right outside Seattle. It was kind of scary, but no
one was seriously hurt, I think. After an hour or so, we could leave and head
for downtown Seattle, which I think is a very nice city!
"It's kind of sad that the tour will be over, but we can't deny that we
are missing our loved ones back home! The tour will be a memory that will stick
to our hearts forever though.
"After Vegas (where Peter [Wildoer, drums] wrote the last report) we
headed for Scottsdale, AZ, and then we played San Diego, CA. We even had a few
hours to cross the border to Mexico and check out Tijuana for a while before it
was time to head for the venue.
"We had three days in L.A. First we played Anaheim and I got to shake
hands with BLACK SABBATH's Bill Ward. The second day we were at a taping of a
Jay Leno show in Burbank. We got front row seats and when Mr. Leno entered he
got right to the front of the stage and shook all DARKANE members hands. It was
fun to see an actual taping of a show like that which can be seen in Sweden
too. Later that night we checked into Beverly Hilton and watched the episode
and realized that our heads was in the picture. If you for some reason can
check back on the shows it was the one with Alanis Morisette, Rosanne Barr and
Margeritha Perrin.
"The next day we played House of Blues in Hollywood. I got to meet Steve
Vai since he was there looking for Devin Townsend and STRAPPING YOUNG LAD.
Steve is a huge influence for me and it was cool to meet him.
"Then we left Sunny California to enter Rainy California and San
Francisco. The venue was small but sweaty! After that we played Orangevale and
Portland, OR last night. The shows have been alike from night to night I would
say. The crowd is great! We've been selling our merch by ourselves and got to
talk to a lot of cool fans which we have enjoyed a lot!
"Finally I would like to thank the bands, SOILWORK, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD
and FEAR FACTORY and the awesome crew that was on this tour! We've had a blast
and everybody has been super cool!!!! Thank you, and hopefully we can do this
some time again! =) Also, thanks to all the fans who showed up early and made
us feel VERY welcome to North America! You all rule!!!!"
DARKANE are touring in support of their fourth album, "Layers of
Lies".
AMORPHIS - More "Eclipse" details
The
new AMORPHIS album, "Eclipse", is scheduled for release on February
17, 2006 on Nuclear Blast Records. The first single, 'House of Sleep', will be
released January 4, 2006.
Introducing new vocalist Tomi Joutsen (SINISTHRA), AMORPHIS' seventh
full-length release in their 15-year career marks a fresh start for the Finnish
band. Thematically, however, the group has come full circle, returning once
more to the subject of the "Kalevala", the Finnish national epic that
provided the inspiration for the classic "Tales From The Thousand
Lakes".
"Eclipse" tells the tale of Kullervo, the ill-fated
"Kalevala" hero whose tragic childhood and ensuing struggle for a
place in society result in despair, evil deeds and ultimate self-destruction.
The lyrics are adapted from Kullervo's "Story" (1982, transl. Anselm
Hollo), a play by Paavo Haavikko (b. 1931), one of Finland's most esteemed
contemporary poets. Matching the dramatic twists and turns of the Kullervo
saga, AMORPHIS' music evokes an encompassing range of emotions unmatched by any
of their previous albums. From the surprising tenderness of the piano-dominated
'House of Sleep', which was chosen as the first single, to the unbridled fury
of 'Perkele (The God of Fire)', the band intrepidly set out to explore a more
diverse territory than ever on their eternal quest for the perfect melody. And
be there no doubt about it: the growls are back with a vengeance!
The cover artwork for "Eclipse" was created by Travis Smith, who is
renowned for his collaborations with OPETH, ANATHEMA, KATATONIA, ICED EARTH and
numerous others.
The first pressing of "Eclipse" will be a limited digipack edition
featuring the bonus track 'Stonewoman'
"Eclipse" track listing:

HAMMERFALL - Oscar signs in, pays tribute
HAMMERFALL
guitarist Oscar Dronjak has posted the following message on the and's official
web site:
"That's it, we are now back home in Sweden and there are no more shows
scheduled. We had a fantastic five weeks on the road with STRATOVARIUS! Thank
you Timo, Timo, Jörg, Lauri and especially Jens, I will miss all of you guys
tremendously! But we will meet again down the road, of that I'm absolutely
sure.
"SHAKRA and the twenty-something crew members completed this tour and
helped make it a great success, and things would never have been as good
without you. In fact, we had more people than ever before in pretty much every
city, which in itself is a testament to how strong a package this was. So thank
you everyone, who showed up and participated in making every show memorable for
us on stage and — hopefully — for you in the audience as well. Lastly, our
crew, who worked their asses off every single day, there is no way in hell we
could have done this without you guys (and girl). We thank you all!
"Now on to a very sad note, as Sweden lost a great, hilarious, outrageous
comedian this weekend. As hard as it was to believe at first, Micke Dubois,
a.k.a. Svullo, chose to take his own life. HAMMERFALL had a special
relationship with the man, as several of us grew up with his incredible antics
and worshipped the fast wit and insult humor he was so good at. Anders
[Johansson, drums] played on a great album of his, 'Radio KRM', in the
beginning of the Nineties. Svullo was also our man at the scene at the Grammy
Awards a few years ago, when we were unable to attend ourselves. The last time
either of us saw him was at Pub Anchor in Stockholm last spring, when he hosted
a karaoke competition. I will always remember the many over-the-top antics and
funny moments Micke Dubois have brought us, and many of his immortal comments
live on in my daily life. As will the memory of a great, pioneering comedian,
who was disgustingly funny long before many of the 'Jackass' boys became double
digits. R.I.P., Micke!"

LIQUIDO - Past, present & future
LIQUDIO
posted the following status report on their website:
"It's been a while since our last comment on the news-area.
Here's why: Wolfgang is busy founding his own record-label, Tim and Wolle are
building themselves a home and spending some time with their family, Stefan is
exploring college life...
It's been a long and interesting year for us. Not finished yet.... We´ve played
many, many shows a with great responses (and two more are coming up!), and here
I'd like to say thank you for all your support we'e experienced this year
touring Europe. As well thank you for putting us back on the map with 'Ordinary
Life' and the whole album "Float", for both have been a good success
for us after three years without release.
We've entered the charts in Germany, Italy, Austria, Lithuania, Bulgaria,
Indonesia, just to mention a few. It gives us real motivation and confidence
for next year's tenth anniversary of our little rock group. We're still
planning to have a very special show for that very special occasion. Also I'd
like to mention that we´ve got some new shirts with new motifs, and again I
have to say, that I really hope our shop area will be extended
"soon"… Sorry for the delay!
Next year in spring/summer CAGES, Wolfgang's and Stefan's side-band, will
release a whole album and therefore go to the studio in February/March.
But until then we all got a lot of celebrating and eating to do: Merry
Christmas!

SUBWAY TO SALLY - Fan poll announced
German
medieval rockers SUBWAY TO SALLY are preparing for their first accoustic tour
ever! The track was aptly titled "Nackt" ("Nude") and will
take place in April.

their offical homepage. To choose the seltlist for these shows, take part the voting!
CLAWFINGER - New video on band website
CLAWFINGER
frontman Zak Tell has posted the following statement on the bands official
website:
"Heya people, this is just a quick newsletter to let you know that there
is a free video available on our homepage
now that was made by the one and only Bård! Once upon a time he had a konkord
camera that was not capable of this kind of magic but now he's updated and has
turned into a damn Francis Ford Coppola, or so he believes himself:D Anyway
it's a very nice little piece of work so if your connection allows you to
download files that are larger than 5 MB then do it, the file is about 44 MB so
a cable connection or extraordinary patience is recommended! Other news is that
the tourdates just keep on pouring in so be sure to visit the tour link on our
homepage for the latest updates, you never know, we might even be playing in
your hometown! Well people that's all from me for now, take care, have
yourselves a merry little X-mas and don't forget to listen to "Hate
Yourself With Style" until your ears bleed! Peace/Zak

GOD
DETHRONED update from the road
"Yo
lads,
We’re halfway the tour with THE HAUNTED and GOD FORBID and it’s going great so
far! Didn’t really had any major troubles and we played a lot of cool shows.
Though we don’t really play for a death metal audience, we get a sh*tload of
incredibly good reactions. Wicked!
Last night The Haunted´s guitar player Jensen drove us all the way to
Barcelona, Spain, cause apparently he wanted to do something useful instead of
getting bored on the tourbus. It was cosy, but we didn’t have any sleep. Right now
we’re hanging around, spending too much money on coffee and waiting for the
other The Haunted guys to show up.
A big "thanx!!" to all the crazy mothafu*kahz who banged their head,
gave us some horns, started a slamming pit, or just enjoyed one of our performances
on this tour. Y´all make it worthwhile! Also expect a picture gallery update
and a tour report right after we´re home again.
But now it´s time to rock the stage in Barcelona..." (Isaac Delahaye/God

Cannibal Corpse news
Legendary
death metallers CANNIBAL CORPSE have
set "Kill" as the title of
their tenth album, due in March/April via Metal Blade Records Europe. The CD is
being recorded at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida with producer Erik
Rutan (MORBID ANGEL, HATE ETERNAL).
Comments
bassist Alex Webster: "Hey everybody, since word seems to be out, we
figured we'd make it official. Our new album will be entitled "Kill".
Also,
although everybody probably already had figured this out, we'll make it
official as well: Guitarist Rob Barrett has rejoined as a permanent member. He
has contributed a song to the new album as well. OK, check back in a few days
for the track listing and some other info."
With regards to the new album's musical direction, the band had previously
said, "We are doing everything we can to make sure it's the heaviest, most
brutal one we've ever made."

Metal Blade signs Torture Killer
Metal
Blade Records is happy to announce the signing of Torture Killer from Finland!
Torture Killer features Chris Barnes of Six Feet Under fame on vocals!
Let´s
have a word from the band about all this:
"Well,
we never would’ve expected where we would stand with this band in 2005 when we
first started playing together under the name of Torture Killer. A lot of the
interviews we did to promote the debut album "For Maggots to Devour"
asked if we knew what the Six Feet Under guys and especially Chris Barnes
thought about us. After all, the link between us and his work with 6FU is more
than obvious. Truthfully, we kinda wondered that ourselves as well. Well, now
we know.
Chris contacted us last October (2004) with a very supportive and friendly
note. The name Torture Killer caught his attention and was intrigued enough to
check us out - finding us in the difficult situation we were at with the line
up. Now, we are proud to announce him as the new Torture Killer vocalist and
that he will be handling the vocals on "Swarm!" - The renamed 2nd
album. Here’s what he has to say about it:
"I’m very happy to announce that I have joined the band Torture Killer
full time. These guys are some of the best musicians I have ever been involved
with, and I am 100% intent on using all my resources and energy to help propel
this band to the top of the death metal food chain. I am extremely pleased with
the songs we’ve put together for the CD ‘Swarm!’, and I can’t wait to get out
on tour with the band and kill every one of you sick fuc*ers!!! See you
soon." - Barnes
With a back catalogue including death metal classics such as "Butchered at
Birth", "Tomb of the Mutilated", "The Bleeding",
"Haunted" and "Maximum Violence" it is obvious that the
eyes of death metal fans will be on us - in good and bad.
We are also happy and proud to announce that we are now signed to the legendary
Metal Blade Records. The basic tracks for "Swarm!" were recorded way
back in January 2005, Chris did his vocals at The Hit Factory, Florida in
May/June with Chris Carroll and the album was mixed and mastered by Chris and
Erik Rutan on October. Not only that, the cover artwork is done by our favorite
artist Wes Benscoter (covers for such bands as Mortician and Vehemence) who
gave the album the visual impact it needed.

SOILWORK - Line up changes
Guitarist Peter Wichers has left Sweden's SOILWORK. His
official statement on the matter reads as follows:
"I have decided to part ways with SOILWORK. This has been one of my
hardest decisions to make, and SOILWORK has not only been my band but my second
family and very good friends for almost 10 years. I'm just worn out from all
the touring and I have reached a point in my life where touring is just not
possible for me anymore. I need a break from the touring so that I can actually
begin to build a more solid ground to stand on for the future. I have on this
journey met so many amazing people, made so many new friends, played in front
of thousands of people, and I got to travel to places I have always dreamt of
visiting. SOILWORK has reached a level I never thought was possible, and I am
so proud to have been a part of this amazing band experience and working
alongside with such amazing people like I have. I know that in order for
SOILWORK to reach a new level there has to be even more touring done, and I
feel as if its only fair that someone else therefore fills my spot now instead
of later. I have decided to continue with my second passion in life, which is
music production & recording, and in order to achieve this goal I need to
put all my time and energy into this. SOILWORK and me will remain great friends
and I wish them all the success in the future. I also wish to extend a gigantic
'THANK YOU' to all the fans, the label, friends & bands and magazines for
the great support and encouragement. I can also say that this is not the end
for me in music, but the beginning of something new!"
In other news, drummer Dirk Verbeuren — who played on the band's most recent
CD, "Stabbing the Drama", and has been touring with the group as a
session drummer — has announced the he will be joining SOILWORK as a permanent
member of the group. His statement follows:
"It has been almost two years since Peter first gave me a call offering me
to join SOILWORK for their first headlining tour in Europe. Many tours and one
album later, I feel like a part of the family. Be it on a human or musical
level, everything has clicked perfectly since day one, and it has been a truly
mindblowing experience. Therefore I am very happy to announce my becoming
SOILWORK's official full-time drummer! As some of you may already know, I also
play in my own band SCARVE, and I will keep on doing so. Schedules will probably
be hectic at times, but SCARVE will keep on writing music and touring as much
as possible. It's a time of many changes, but the future is ours and SOILWORK
has many more things to offer. We are all very confident about what lies ahead,
and we WILL kick your a**es!!!"
Commented SOILWORK vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid:
"Peter's decision came of course as a shock to me and the other guys in
the band. I want you to know that we really respect his decision and that we
wish him all the luck in the future. His decision will not affect SOILWORK's
touring, we will continue just as planned. A replacement will be announced in a
month or so and I can assure you that we won't make you disappointed even
though it's really hard replacing such an amazing musician and a loyal friend.
I also want to take the time to welcome our amazing drummer and good friend Mr.
Dirk Verbeuren on board. He´s been with us for almost two years as a session
drummer and has now confirmed his permanent spot in the band. We will announce
European tourdates in about 2 weeks. This will mainly contain dates in
countries that we missed out on the previous headline tour. Tourdates for the
U.S. will also be announced in a near future... At last, I wanna say that I'll
forever treasure every single moment I shared with Peter and wish him all the
best, you rock bro!!!"
Into Eternity - Return home after intense touring
Canada’s
INTO ETERNITY, who have “added a new dimension to the metal genre” (Brave Words
& Bloody Knuckles magazine, Canada) and conquered the “album of the month”
throne in German Rock Hard magazine with their current album “Buried in
Obliveon”, have wrapped up a solid year of touring North America.
Covering metals musical spectrum, the band have had the honour of sharing the
stage with several of the genre’s top heavyweight bands such as Kataklysm,
Amorphis, Naglfar, Hate Eternal, Krisiun, Hammerfall, Edguy, Stratovarius,
Nevermore, Opeth and many more.
The band is now back at home in Canada and will go into winter hibernation. Mainman
Tim Roth reports:
“It\'s really nice to take it easy at home. All the guys have been recovering
after a year of hard touring. It was an amazing year for our band. There are so
many people that we would like to thank for that. Without the fans coming and
supporting us, there would be no shows. For that we are very proud of our new
fan base. We hope to see you all next year on the road.
All of December we plan on taking off. In the meantime we will be writing our
music for the next INTO ETERNITY album, which we plan on recording in early
Spring. It will be good to recharge our batteries and live a
\"normal\" life for awhile. The main focus now will be our new
record. I know we have the talent now to come up with some great songs. After
doing 140 shows, I think the guys are all comfortable with every aspect of the
band. The new songs should prove it all we hope.”
Revolver Magazine US called INTO ETERNITY’s phenomenal album “Buried in
Oblivion” “a defiantly original work filled with stunning musical virtuosity
and truly original ideas.”
Receiving resounding international praise for the album, INTO ETERNITY has
tirelessly introduced it to audiences through relentless touring since its
release. Watch for the band’s follow up album in 2006.

Witchery - "Don't Fear the Reaper" out on Century Media
Records
Century
Media Records is happy to announce the latest addition to our world-wide
family: Sweden’s WITCHERY, who will release their forth full-length and Century
Media debut-album “Don’t Fear The Reaper” in Europe February 27th, 2006.
WITCHERY’s spell was cast upon our earthly existence when four members
splintered off Satanic Slaughter in 1997: Jensen (later with The Haunted),
Richard Corpse, Toxine and Mique. Before recording their debut-album “Restless
And Dead”, Jensen met Sharlee D\'Angelo (also of Arch Enemy and Mercyful Fate
fame, among others) and got him on board for the unholy alliance. Subsequently
the band released the "Witchburner" mini-album (feat. cover songs by
Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, WASP and Accept), their second album “Dead, Hot
And Ready” and was busy touring the US and Europe. The 2001 "Symphony For
The Devil” was their first album staring drummer Martin Axenrot (also in
BLOODBATH, and on tour with Opeth). After touring the US with The Haunted
WITCHERY fell into hibernation for some time, but finally recorded their new
masterpiece “Don’t Fear The Reaper” at Berno Studios in fall 2004. The album
was mixed by Tue Madsen at his Antfarm Studios (The Haunted, Heaven Shall Burn,
Mnemic...) and showcases not only a cover-version of the Satanic Slaughter
classic “Immortal Death”, but also WITCHERY’s feel for catchy and precise metal
tunes.
"Finally, I'll say it again...FINALLY, WITCHERY has signed a new deal.
This time with Century Media. I’m really glad that WITCHERY will be handled by
the same team that have done such a great job for our other bands - THE HAUNTED
and ARCH ENEMY. Our new album "Don't Fear the Reaper" has been
recorded, mixed and mastered since October 2004, so it feels really great to be
able to say to all the WITCHERY fans I’ve met over the past years that the
album will definitely be out early next year!! A new website will be up and
running soon too, so keep an eye out for that... and there will be touring and
festivals in the upcoming year as well...
See you all out there in 2006!!
Jensen and Witchery"
Cronian - Signed to Century Media Records
CRONIAN
PRESS- RELEASE
DECEMBER 2005
We are proud to announce that CRONIAN have officially signed a worldwide record
deal with Century Media Records.
CRONIAN is a duo consisting of Vintersorg and Øystein G. Brun. Already back in
1999 we had plans to do a project together, something beside respective bands
like Vintersorg and Borknagar. The idea floated around for a few years in our
minds, but in 2002 we started the actual process of constructing a musical
expression, then under the name Ion. We had a mutual agreement to only proceed
with the band if we managed to establish a unique and original sound. That’s
what we have done and that’s what we prepare to show the world....
The debut album will be released early next year, a more specific date will be
announced soon. The title of the album will be “Terra” and the album will
contain 9 songs. Some song titles are: “Cronian”, “The Alp”, “Iceolated” and
“Nonexistence”. The nature of the music is cold, atmospheric (eerie!) and
catchy. So beware!
At http://www.cronian.com you will find
all the latest news and updates available. The site is temporary but will be
upgraded with new design, photos, bio etc. in near future. Keep posted....
Sincerely, THE CRONIANS (Vintersorg and Øystein G. Brun)

Whilst

all over from Amsterdam to Belgium to Germany and France we are really feeling
the love and respect. Also to all our friends in the UK we are coming back for
you muthafu*kas again and we know all our friends will be there to kick some

DIMMU BORGIR - Tribute to Chuck Schuldiner
DIMMU BORGIR's SILENOZ Pays Tribute To Late DEATH
Mastermind CHUCK SCHULDINER
On the fourth anniversary of the passing of DEATH mastermind Chuck Schuldiner,
Norway's Imhotep asked several metal musicians to comment on Schuldiner's
musical legacy and the influence DEATH has had on their music. Guitarist
Silenoz (DIMMU BORGIR, INSIDIOUS DISEASE) had the following to say regarding
Chuck's passing and his contributions to the metal world: "This day, I
walked down the street with a friend of mine when I received a phone call on my
cellphone. Can't remember who told me, but the voice said, 'Chuck just died...'
I stopped, wordless, while my cellphone suddenly slipped down from my hand. It
didn't fall down on the ground but slipped inside of my jacket sleeve. I still
remember this day. It was weird and quite unreal, as I didn't even know the guy
personally, it still made such a huge impact on me.
"His music has always been an inspiration, perhaps not directly on my
playing, but more subconsciously, I'd say. My first band ever used to play many
DEATH covers, and I remember I was proud when I finally learned the songs the
right way, as I was so young back then.
"Sometimes by coincidence, or maybe not, I come up with riffs that I think
sound too much like DEATH, which I know I can't use, for the obvious reason, so
I change it around so I can use the idea either for DIMMU BORGIR as I have done
in the past or now INSIDIOUS DISEASE, my other band, which is more death
metal-oriented. I don't know what Chuck would've thought of our music today,
but I heard from some label people that he told them he liked us back then when
our 'Spiritual Black Dimensions' album came out.
"I used to have 'Leprosy' as my all-time DEATH favorite [album], but now,
recently it's been a close tie between 'Scream Bloody Gore' and 'Symbolic'.
Perhaps these two in particular show best the evolution of his musicianship, as
'Scream Bloody Gore' is so raw and straight-forward, whereas 'Symbolic' is more
innovative, technical, diverse and modern-sounding, still keeping Chuck's
distinct and unique self-taught style of playing. I still listen to his
music."
