SEBASTIEN PAUL (SYRENS CALL)

This French metal band are currently hard at work on their second album. Here we talk to their drummer.

1. What are you currently up to?

We are currently working on our second CD. Our first effort "Fantasea" was released in 2000 and we have taken the time to tour and promote it in our country (France). But now it is time to think about the following. All the songs are already composed and we are working now on arrangements, vocals and demo recording.

2. Who were your influences?

We are influenced by all the good metal bands we listened to but let's say that IRON MAIDEN, SAVATAGE, STRATOVARIUS, DREAM THEATER, VANDEN PLAS are our some of our favourites.

3. Brief history of the band plus the style of music you play.

SYRENS CALL is a French band that can be classified under Heavy Prog Metal I think. The band was founded in 1997 and released its first CD "Fantasea" in Oct 2000. The French label Brennus gave us the opportunity to be distributed in our own country but also in 12 other lands. In Brasil and in Russia, "Fantasea" is distributed by Hellion Records and Maximum CD respectively. Our first CD has been welcomed by international press, webzines, radios and metal fans. Since 2001 we have done a lot of promo and gigs to support our CD. We played with DORO, VANDEN PLAS, SUPERIOR, ARK, THRESHOLD, FREAK KITCHEN...

4. What has been the highlight(s) and lowpoint(s) of your career to date?

The highlights is probably the signature of our first record deal with Brennus and great gigs like the 2001 Raismes Festival with ARK, THRESHOLD and FREAK KITCHEN. Great memories.

The lowpoints are all forgotten, we only keep the good part of our musical adventure :-))

5. How easy is it to gets gigs? What is the live music scene like?

For a couple of years we have a tour manager that did a great job to get good gigs for us. It is not so easy to find good places where a metal band can play in France. This country is definitively not a the land of Metal:-)) Nevertheless there are a lot of metal fans but surprisingly not a lot of promotion (almost no metal on radio for instance) and therefore it stays a real underground scene.

6. What do you think of the state of rock music at the moment? Do you listen to radio much at all? Has the Internet helped music grow or hindered it?

As I said before, in France, Metal is not played on the radio at all so I only listen to it to get the news not for music. Internet has been a key point in the promotion of our first CD. It allows us to be discovered by fans all over the World. Please come and visit us at www.syrenscall.fr.fm

7. If you could create a fantasy band - what would be the line-up and why?

Vocals: Bruce Dickinson because he is the best metal singer I have ever heard. He is powerfull and melodic. Great ! Bass: Steve Harris because he is also a good composer. Rythm: Jeff Waters for the incredible riffs he composed, I love Annihilator! Lead: John Petrucci for the feeling Drums: Mike Mangini for his technique Key: Jordan Rudess because he is the best

8. What CD's do you currently have available and where can they be purchased from?

"Fantasea" is distributed in France by Brennus and is available on our website. There are also some samples to discover SYRENS CALL. Please feel free to visit us. See you soon on www.syrenscall.fr.fm

10. Message to your fans?

Thanks for your interest and support. SYRENS CALL is now preparing its return with a new CD full of metal riffs and great melodies. If you are into arrangements, guitar solos, female vocals and melodies, I think SYRENS CALL could be the band you were waiting for :-)) Take care. Seb
