BLONDIE At The BBCCD/DVD - EMI (2010)

Blondie

This CD and DVD set makes the perfect Christmas stocking filler. I mean, what could be better than finding Debbie Harry in a pair of stockings at the end of your bed? I suppose if Chris Stein and the Blondie boys were there as well, that could be a bit of a nightmare. But 30 years ago it was probably every young man's fantasy.

Scary then, to think that this release is over 30 years old. Of course, it captures Debbie in all her iconic glory - a woman, like Monroe, that the camera simply loved.

Back in the day, we were lucky enough to have the Old Grey Whistle Test to pipe us into the New Year with a live concert. And in 1979, the BBC's outside broadcast unit headed to Glasgow to catch Blondie in the midst of their Eat To The Beat tour. The band were at the peak of their success, Parallel Lines having only recently established them as a worldwide phenomena.

This CD / DVD combo captures both the hour long TV broadcast and the fuller concert which was broadcast on radio. And for good measure, the DVD includes OGWT studio footage from March '78 (Fan Mail, (I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence Dear, and Detroit 442), and Top Of The Pops performances of Denis, Picture This, Sunday Girl and Dreaming.

In hindsight, it could be argued that the visual performance was a little pedestrian, but let's not forget that stage shows in those days amounted to little more than a basic lightshow, something that, at the time, technology struggled to capture well on camera.

But that's minor nitpicking. And if TOTP performances were mimed, who cares? It doesn't spoil one little bit this piece of rock history which will be welcomed by ageing fans everywhere.
