JIMMY BUFFETT Live At Fenway Park Mailboat Records MBD2115 (2006)

Singer/guitarist Jimmy Buffett has a big band totalling 3 percussionists and 3 guitars on top of his own, with horns and backing singers aplenty. Think a seriously countrified Bruce Springsteen. A couple of dancers add to that image.

This live set, spanning 31 tracks over 2 discs, was recorded over 2 nights at the Boston Red Sox baseball stadium.

The steel drums add a nice touch, there’s the odd nod at rock, blues and jazz, but basically this is a country of the commercial / Springsteen variety. Thankfully not as commercial as some of the trash coming out of Nashville, making it bearable,

The sound and style is pretty American and unlikely to have mass appeal over here. Nothing wrong with the performance, and the package is great (2 discs, bonus 55minute DVD, booklet, digipak) but I found the lack of any real rock credentials hard to handle.
