BRAZEN ABBOT ‘A Decade Of Brazen Abbot’ Frontiers FRCD212 (2004)

Yes it is 10 years since virtuoso guitarist Nikolo Kotzev formed Brazen Abbot, and if this live set is anything to go by, theyíve produced some superb metal along the way.

Glenn Hughes sang on the debut all those years ago, but here itís former Purple/Rainbow/Malmsteen singer Joe Lynn Turner.

Recorded in Kotzevís native Bulgaria, the crowd are particularly receptive, and the music is strong and solid. Think the heavy end of Deep Purple and heavy it up some more, it also shows how good is JLT when heís not doing the commercial stuff.

Although Iíve compared Deep Purple, itís not as derivative as it could be, and itís thoroughly enjoyable beginning to end. Old and new numbers sit nicely together, itís a good 10 year celebration by any standards.

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
