MAGNUM The Classic Collection (2-CD) Salvo (2009)
Another classic rock band who have recently put out a fantastic new album, and another chance to re-appraise their extensive and excellent back catalogue.
From the late 70s to the early 90s, Magnum put out a series of fantastic albums, mixing hard rock, melodic rock and pomp.
The set opens with the title track of the band's debut 'Kingdom Of Madness', with its folky touches between the riffs, while 'Changes' is a touch commercial and very catchy.
Other early tracks on disc 1 that stand out are 'Soldier Of The Line' and 'The Spirit' although, to be honest, there isn't one bad track here. Chief songwriter Tony Clarkin is an underrated guitarist and plays a mean riff and solo, also knowing when to give space to the keyboards and vocals. Singer Bob Catley has a solid and clear voice that suits the music perfectly.
Disc 2 opens with a whopping 6 tracks from 'On A Story Teller's Night'. That specific album was unsurpassed by anyone, ever, and is the pomp rock equivalent of Led Zep's IV or Motorhead's Ace Of Spades. Later the band would sign to Polydor and that period (covered here by live tracks) produced as good as hard rock with a commercial edge as Magnum ever did. 'Vigilante' and 'Days Of No Trust' still stand up today.
If you don't have any Magnum (shame on you), this is an excellent introduction.
