GLENN HUGHES Songs In The Key Of Rock Frontiers FRCD148(2003)
The Voice of Rock is back! Glenn Hughes has a problem as I am sure he
loves the funk/soul style songs more whereas most of his fans want to hear
him rock out. Hence, some of his solo albums fall between the two camps and
end up pleasing no one! But this album sees the rock back but cleverly woven
into many songs are a funk/soul vibe. Joining Glenn on the album are long
time drummer Gary Ferguson (ex-Gary Moore/Hughes & Thrall), guitarists JJ
Marsh and Jeff Kollman (Sign of 4/Cosmosquad), who co-produces the album
with Glenn and Ed Roth on keys.
‘In My Blood’ gets things underway with a swirl of Hammond organ and its
off into a rocker, with Hughes trademark wails firmly in place. Not unlike
something of last year’s excellent Sign of 4 album, which Jeff Kollman
appeared on. Bit of a groove thing on ‘Lost In The Zone’ before some more
all out rock on ‘Gasoline’, with more screams from Glenn! The ballad ‘Higher
Places’ is a n undoubted highlight, featuring great guitar soloing - almost
Brian may style at times. More mellower moments on ‘Written All Over Your
Face’, complete with gospel style backing vocals. Even a couple of uptempo
melodic rockers in ‘The Truth’ and ‘Courageous’.Tasty piece of funk rock in
the shape of ‘Get You Stoned’, where Hughes’ bass melds nicely with the
drumming of Gary Ferguson.
Worth a place in your CD collection, with Hughes’ voice still one of the
best in the world of rock ‘n’ roll. A very upbeat, well-rounded and
enjoyable album. Special mention to the excellent guitar work of JJ Marsh
and Jeff Kollman. This album will definitely please his many fans out there.
