CHRIS THOMPSON Timeline Voiceprint (2009)

Chris Thompson

The Manfred Mann singer has had a long career and played with many. And as a taster for his forthcoming album 'Rediscovery', this set features 5 tracks from the new set and compiles new recordings of older and live material.

The new material mixes AOR and power pop, reminiscent of the mid 80s. Thompson does have a very strong voice, a little husky. Solid production, choir, decent guitar solos (of the slow searing kind), there are touches of Paul Carrack and Colin Blunstone.

The next three songs are covers, a little unexpected, but enjoyable all the same. Fleetwood Mac's 'Don't Stop' is worth a listen, as is 'She's Not There' (written by Rod Argent). Here the band features noted bassist Laurence Cottle and guitar legend Clem Clempson.

Three more recordings feature 'If You Remember Me', 'For You' and 'You're The Voice'. The latter was a massive hit for John Farnham, a track co-written by Thompson.

Four live tracks include two Manfred Mann hits in 'Blinded By The Light' and 'Davy's On The Road Again', were taken from a concert by the Mads Eriksen band (available on DVD).

An interesting, largely enjoyable if occasionally mixed bag, it will please Thompson fans for sure, and a good intro to his work.
