GLENN HUGHES Live In Australia Edsel (2007)

Glenn Hughes

Quite why this CD is sent out a month after the official release is anyone's guess, but with a name like Glenn Hughes you just have to give it a listen. Having seen the ex Purple and Sabbath man live several times before I had high expectations.

This live set was recorded in The Basement in 2006, and sees 'The Voice Of Rock' in acoustic mode.

The small crowd are up close, and Hughes' voice really shines over the strumming.

Opening with "Coast To Coast", which goes down very well, we are then treated to "I Found A Woman" from his Play Me Out solo opus.

Deep Purple are represented by "This Time Around", "You Keep On Moving" and of course "Mistreated". The latter lends itself well to the acoustic set; the burning omission of "Burn" is, I guess, understandable. I doubt it was stand up in the circumstances.

"Nights In White Satin" is done remarkably well, a track Glenn recorded on his recent Music For The Divine CD. The strings work well too.

Soulful yes, rock'n'roll no. But the whole set is worth it for the song selection and of course That Voice.

****½
