RHAPSODY ‘The Dark Secret’SPV 078-69732CD (2004)

This Italian set have released this EP/Mini album as a taster to a forthcoming album and what a joy most of it is.

The opener 'Unholy Warcry' (previously reviewed here) is a great gothic metal mixing operatic, melodic and speed metal and narration from the legend Christopher Lee.

Thunder’s Mighty Roar' features some nicely worked strings (almost clichéd commercial style but in the nicest possible way) – and the music is a polished metallic Uriah Heep with Manowar style rough vocals. And the guitar moves to that in Brian May’s 'Cyborg'.

Guardians Of Destiny' is the only weak track on the set with the medieval intro a little annoying, although the female vocals add a nice touch.

The final two tracks finish in classic style, including the 10 minute epic 'Sacred Power Of Raging Winds'. Think Operatic Manowar, Magnum, even Mob Rules and Freedom Call only more so.

A thoroughly enjoyable set well worth searching out.
