PAUL GILBERT Get Out Of My Yard
Mascot Records M7202-2 (2006)

Shred guitarist Gilbert on a label that's produced a lot of 'head up own ass jazz fusion' - I was wary at first.

The opening title track is just that - plenty of unnecessary shred, and 'Hurry Up' feels disjointed. Not until track 3, 'The Curse Of Castle Dragon' that we get something that sounds like a song, better structured, mixing shred with rhythm and melody. 'Marine Layer' features some nice acoustic layering. Some truly great moments.

If you like fast polished instrumental shred you'll love this album, but only 60% of this sounds like music you'd actually want to listen to, the rest technical practices and 'Look what I can do' which shouldn't be allowed on CD.

**½

*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
