MCM ‘Ritual Factory’ Lion Music LMC104 (2004)

This three piece produce some amazing sounds, spanning prog metal to funk fusion and Indian rhythms. It’s clear they’re all technically very gifted, but the music can get pretty anal too.

The range of rhythms and noises is fast and vast. Two of the band members (bassist Randy Coven and drummer John Maculuso) are ex Malmsteen and Vai, which should indicate where the metal influences come from. Guitarist Alex Masi is a bit of a wizz too.

Some of the ideas are similar to what the Bruford-powered King Crimson did 20 years ago, with a more metal edge here. There’s also a touch of Weather Report, as well a cover of their ‘Black Market’.

The album is totally instrumental - you wouldn’t know what key or time signature to sing in, listening to this.

This album will either blow your mind, or leave you wanting to.
