COLORPOOL ‘Drift Away ’(2004)

I always like listening to new bands as I am not stuck in one era musically and one of the pleasures of running the Newswire and helping out on Get Ready To Rock has been discovering bands like Power Quest, Black #5, Jarcrew, Up! Kings of Leon and Intense to name but six! I can add Colorpool to this now as well.

A UK based three piece comprising John (guitar/vocals), Lai (bass/vocals) and Ritchie (drums/vocals). Pop rock is their bag and ‘D-Minus’ is a catchy little guitar driven number that kicks off after a neat bass/drum intro. T

The band use melodies well and could be the Wildhearts with less punk attitude. ‘Drift Away’ again has a rumbling bass underpinning the frantic guitar and some bizarre background vocals - not sure what they are doing there. It reminds me of early XTC. Not so keen on ‘Suite Barraca’, though, which just doesn’t gell with me.

So many bands out there vying for your attention but I’d single this band out as worthy of more investigation.
