BRIAN WILSON 'I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times'
MCA MCD11270 (2005)

Brian Wilson

This 1995 set, produced by Don Was, gets a full reissue here, and is full of gentle, beautifully crafted songs as you’d expect, with some nods back towards the Beach Boys.

Sadly, from the outset, it’s clear it’s not a great album. There’s something missing, and I’m not going to speculate as to the state of Wilson’s mind. Maybe it’s something he had to get out of his system, it’s hard to tell. No amount of drugs can completely fry that kind of song writing genius but the arrangements and musicianship sound a little half hearted. “Love And Mercy” verges on folk retuned for 80s pop.

“Do It Again” does salvage something, but by then it’s too late. Wilson has done so much better before and since.

***** Out of this world | **** Pretty damn fine |
*** OK, approach with caution unless you are a fan |
** Instant bargain bin fodder | * Ugly. Just ugly
