Now here is a band that have garnered a bit of heavyweight support early in their careers. Slipknot’s Joey Jordison has waxed lyrical about the band’s talents and Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden was impressed enough to invite singer Tarin Kerrey to provide vocals for his solo album. Not bad for a band who have yet to release their debut album. The four piece from Exeter have a lot to live up to then, so can they deliver ?

This self titled album is due out in February and is released via the bands own record label, again showing the bands determination for success. The opener ‘ For Love’ is a fairly straight forward heavy number with Tarin displaying a breathy vocal style until she reaches the chorus when she shows the other side of her character with a strong, soaring delivery. This continues during ‘Anger Song’ which again is another heavy number .

It is during the third track ‘ Contagious’ though that the bands main influence starts to surface. System Of A Down have obviously featured on many of the bands ipod play lists and the band have taken their eclectic style and made it their own. This is further demonstrated on the frankly mental ‘ Bangkok Nights’, it is a real whirlwind of a song.

As well as the louder numbers, the band can also turn their hands to a more ambient style as shown on ‘ A Place That You Call Home’, they do name Massive Attack as another band influence. These lighter interludes are kept to a minimum though and normal business is soon resumed with‘Live Consume Drive’ and the fast and furious ‘ Territory’ which is knocking on the door of hardcore punk.

Sanguine are a band of many parts and an eclectic sound, which combines into an interesting debut album with plenty to keep you interested. Perhaps those two upstarts Smith and Jordison are on to something after all…
