Playing a set of his own material plus songs from his 70’s band Lucifer’s Friend it was a solid set of hard rock tunes with some mellower moments. One standout track was ‘I am Alive’ and the bass solo by Steve Dunning – a highly talented bass player. John Lawton still has very powerful and emotive voice and worked the crowd well. An ideal support act for any band. Uriah Heep took to the stage and launched straight into ‘Easy Livin’ – what a way to start the gig! They played some rarely aired classics including ‘The Other Side of Midnight’ (from my personal favourate Heep album ‘Head First’) and a storming version of ‘Stealin’. There was plenty of classic era Heep in the shape of ‘July Morning’, ‘Sweet Freedom’ and a very ‘eavy version of ‘Gypsy’ (a song that was omitted from last year’s Magician’s Birthday Party gig). The band really enjoy themselves with vocalist Bernie Shaw putting so much heart and soul into his singing, as well as having a great stage presence. Mick Box just grins like a Cheshire cat all night whilst throwing his trademark shapes everywhere! The rhythm section of bass player Trevor Bolder (he is Derek Smalls from Spinal tap!) and drummer Lee Kerslake play as tight as ever, with Lee’s vocals adding depth to the Heep sound. Keyboard player Phil Lanzon was much more audible than last year, with some great keyboard work, especially during ‘The Magician’s Birthday’. Encores including ‘Bird of Prey’ and ‘Look at Yourself’ – classics straight and simple. A great night with a band that are really enjoying themselves and it shows in the playing. Go and see them for a night of quality rock music (the venue was ¾ full – where were the rest?).
